Genesis Magma Racing - A New Force in Endurance Racing

Genesis's foray into motorsports with the Genesis Magma Racing team is a momentous occasion. The LMDh car, known as the GMR-001 Hypercar, has been revealed and is built to strict LMDh rules, qualifying it for the GTP and Hypercar classes of major championships. This means it will go head-to-head with formidable competitors like Acura, Cadillac, Ferrari, Porsche, and Toyota. The team's goal is to achieve outright wins at prestigious events such as the 24 Hours of Daytona and 24 Hours of Le Mans. The GMR-001 is set to start racing in the World Endurance Championship as early as 2026 and in the SportsCar Championship the following year. Two cars will be fielded in each series, with confirmed drivers including Le Mans winner and current World Endurance Drivers’ Champion André Lotterer, and Pipo Derani. These drivers will play a crucial role in the car's development through 2025 and beyond.Genesis has not disclosed many details about the GMR-001, but it has confirmed that it will use a chassis from Oreca, one of the four sanctioned chassis suppliers for LMDh. Under LMDh rules, constructors have the freedom to choose the powertrain, with a maximum output of 670 hp. Most existing LMDh cars utilize a combination of a gas engine and a single motor-generator, similar to the setup seen in the Genesis X Gran Racer Vision Gran Turismo race car concept unveiled in June, which may influence the new Magma models.Hyundai Motorsport, which manages Hyundai N's efforts in various rally and touring car series, will oversee the Genesis Magma Racing team. Cyril Abiteboul, a senior manager with experience from the Caterham and Renault Formula 1 teams, will serve as team principal. French racing team IDEC Sport will also provide support, with drivers like America's Logan Sargeant, Jamie Chadwick, and Mathys Jaubert set to participate. The partnership is set to begin with an LMP2 entry in the European Le Mans Series next year. This LMDh program is not only about racing but also about developing future technology for road cars. It helps promote the brand in a performance light, which is crucial as Genesis prepares to launch cars under the new Magma performance sub-brand. The Magma sub-brand is designed to rival the likes of BMW M and Mercedes-Benz AMG, and Genesis has confirmed plans to offer a Magma version of every vehicle in its lineup. Performance upgrades will include increased power, track-tuned suspension, and functional aerodynamic features. Racing legend Jacky Ickx is actively involved in the development of these cars.
