On a bright afternoon, Fresno State officially unveiled Ryan McCarthy as the 12th leader in the storied history of its women’s basketball program. Known for his exceptional coaching skills and passion for the game, McCarthy arrives with an impressive track record from Alaska Anchorage, where he earned six Coach of the Year honors in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC). Over the past decade, McCarthy guided his team to one of the highest winning percentages and total victories in NCAA Division II basketball, boasting an overall record of 309-67. Fresno State Athletic Director Garrett Klassy expressed confidence in McCarthy's ability to elevate the program, emphasizing that winners transcend levels. The hiring process focused on cultural alignment, and McCarthy’s unique ‘mayhem’ style of play, inspired by Jerry Tarkanian’s amoeba defense, promises to bring excitement to the court.

McCarthy's journey to Fresno is marked by numerous achievements. At Alaska Anchorage, he not only established himself as a formidable coach but also demonstrated adaptability and resilience. His teams consistently excelled under his leadership, often outperforming expectations. During their recruitment discussions, Klassy shared insights into McCarthy’s character, noting his balance of intensity and empathy. Their dinner meeting at Yosemite Ranch revealed McCarthy’s softer side, reinforcing Klassy’s belief in his suitability for the role. McCarthy plans to implement a fast-paced playing style, focusing on player development and skill enhancement while maintaining a high-pressure defensive system.

Prior to his tenure at Alaska Anchorage, McCarthy honed his craft at Northwest Nazarene University within the GNAC, serving in various capacities from assistant to interim head coach. His contributions there included guiding the Crusaders to two NCAA Tournament appearances and a commendable winning percentage. In the 2010-11 season, McCarthy stepped up as acting head coach, leading the team to a respectable 14-13 record and a spot in the inaugural GNAC Tournament. The following year, as associate head coach, he helped steer NNU to an 18-10 finish.

Beyond coaching, McCarthy boasts a robust playing career. He showcased his talents professionally in Germany with Tus Bramsche during the 2006-07 season, leading the league in three-pointers and free throw percentage. Earlier in 2006, he played for the Central Oregon Hotshots in the International Basketball League, averaging 16 points, four assists, and four rebounds per game. These experiences have undoubtedly shaped his coaching philosophy and approach to the game.

The arrival of Ryan McCarthy marks a new chapter for Fresno State women's basketball. With a clear vision and proven strategies, McCarthy aims to transform the program through innovative tactics and a relentless pursuit of excellence. Fans can look forward to an era defined by dynamic gameplay and unwavering commitment to success both on and off the court.
