Beacon College Scores Big with WNBA Star as Women's Basketball Coach

Beacon College has taken a significant step forward in the evolution of its athletics program by recently hiring a former WNBA player to lead the women's basketball team. Mfon Udoka, a Nigerian-American who dazzled on the court during the 2004 Summer Olympics, has been tapped to take the reins of the program and turn it into a force to be reckoned with.

A Storied Career Comes Full Circle

Mfon Udoka's basketball journey has been nothing short of remarkable. As a standout player at DePaul University, she led the team to three NCAA tournament appearances and amassed over 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds during her collegiate career. Her professional career took her to the WNBA, where she played for the Detroit Shock, Houston Comets, and Los Angeles Sparks, as well as numerous international teams in countries like Portugal, Israel, China, Spain, Russia, South Korea, Turkey, and France.Udoka's most notable achievement, however, came when she represented her Nigerian heritage on the international stage. In the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Udoka and her Nigerian teammates, coached by former Orlando Magic player Sam Vincent, who is now the men's basketball coach at Beacon, were underdogs going into the final match against South Korea. Despite losing all their previous games, the Nigerian team emerged victorious, winning by four points. "It didn't matter at that point that we had lost all our games before," Udoka recalled. "It was just the best feeling ever."

Embracing the Challenge of Rebuilding Beacon's Women's Basketball Program

Now, Udoka and Vincent have reunited at Beacon College, where they are tasked with reviving the women's basketball program. The team was winless in its first season in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association, but Udoka is undaunted by the challenge. Drawing on her own experiences of perseverance and growth, she is determined to build a winning culture both on and off the court.Udoka has already begun the process of recruiting players who can make an immediate impact, with conditioning starting in September. Her goal is to instill a sense of discipline, dedication, and a winning mentality in her players. "I like the idea of building something," Udoka said, reflecting on the opportunity to shape the program from the ground up.

Growing up as the middle child and only girl in a biracial family, she developed a love for sports at a young age, often playing with her two brothers. Her younger sibling, Ime Udoka, is a former NBA player and the current head coach of the Houston Rockets.Udoka's journey to the top of the basketball world was not without its challenges. After a successful collegiate career, she faced a career-threatening injury when she tore her ACL while playing in the WNBA.
