Former Tennessee Star Joins Memphis Women's Basketball Staff

A new chapter has begun for the Memphis women’s basketball team as they welcome Shalon Pillow to their coaching staff. Formerly of Florida A&M, Pillow brings a wealth of experience and leadership qualities that promise to elevate the program. With a storied career both as a player and coach, including time under legendary coach Pat Summitt at Tennessee, Pillow is set to contribute significantly to the development of the team. Coach Alex Simmons expressed excitement over this addition, highlighting Pillow’s extensive knowledge and passion for women's basketball, which aligns perfectly with the program’s goals.

Shalon Pillow's journey in basketball began during her playing days at the University of Tennessee from 1998 to 2002. Standing at an imposing 6-foot-3, she played center under the tutelage of the iconic Pat Summitt. During her tenure, she was part of two Final Four appearances and four Southeastern Conference (SEC) championship-winning teams. Following her collegiate career, Pillow transitioned into coaching, initially serving as an assistant at Kentucky from 2009 to 2014. Her expertise expanded further when she joined Middle Tennessee State's staff under Rick Insell from 2014 to 2020.

In 2021, Pillow took on the head coaching role at Florida A&M, where she led the team for two seasons, despite facing challenges reflected in a 9-48 overall record. Post FAMU, she served as varsity girls' basketball coach and assistant athletic director at Saint Andrew’s School in Boca Raton, Florida, for the last two years. This diverse background equips her with a comprehensive understanding of basketball at various levels, making her a valuable asset to any program.

Coach Alex Simmons, who also had the privilege of playing under Pat Summitt, sees great potential in Pillow's mentorship abilities. In a statement released on June 6, Simmons noted how Pillow’s vast experience and dedication will guide the program toward success. Her role as chief of staff is expected to bring fresh perspectives and strategies to the table, fostering growth within the coaching staff and players alike.

The integration of Shalon Pillow into the Memphis women's basketball team signifies a strategic move aimed at enhancing the program’s competitive edge. Her unique blend of experiences—ranging from elite college play to varied coaching positions—positions her well to impart wisdom and inspire those around her. As the team moves forward, the influence of Pillow's seasoned guidance is likely to manifest in improved performance and cohesion, setting the stage for future achievements in women's basketball.
