This maneuver set off a chain reaction that would ultimately lead to the fiery crash.The Toyota Avalon, in an effort to avoid the Nissan, swerved to the right, but the Nissan ended up side-swiping the Toyota in the eastbound lane. This caused the Nissan to rotate, eventually leading the GMC Terrain to T-bone the passenger side of the Nissan.

The impact of the collision caused the Nissan to catch fire, and it was only through the quick actions of passersby that the driver of the Nissan, a 39-year-old man from Fargo, was pulled from the burning vehicle. The driver suffered serious, life-threatening injuries and was transported to Lisbon Hospital via ambulance. From there, he was airlifted by Sanford Air Med to Sanford Hospital in Fargo for further treatment.
