Archetype Entertainment has unveiled the first comprehensive look at the gameplay for its highly anticipated role-playing game, Exodus. This reveal strongly evokes the classic Mass Effect series, a connection that is unsurprising given the game's development history. Announced in 2023, Exodus is being crafted by a team largely comprising former BioWare developers, many of whom were instrumental in creating the original Mass Effect games. The game thrusts players 40,000 years into a distant future, where humanity has fled a dying Earth and established new societies across star systems 16,000 light-years away. A central narrative element is time dilation, which has caused the first human arrivals to evolve into genetically advanced beings known as 'Celestials.' Players will step into the shoes of Jun Aslan, a more recent human arrival navigating this complex new galaxy.
The newly released gameplay trailer provides an extended view beyond the initial glimpse offered at the 2025 Game Awards. It showcases three distinct scenarios: the first features Jun and companions Tom and Elise engaging in cover-based combat against humans and robots in Lyonesse, a bustling port city on the human planet Lidon, demonstrating familiar health bars and weapon selection reminiscent of Mass Effect. The second segment highlights an innovative movement mechanic as Jun utilizes a 'railclaw' (or 'space grappling hook') to traverse the exterior of an orbital tower, offering breathtaking views of Lyonesse and the Lidon horizon. The final sequence transports Jun to the planet Khonsu, where an ancient Celestial shrine introduces a mystical element to the game, hinting at an overarching mystery that transcends conventional combat and exploration, echoing the enigmatic allure that captivated Mass Effect fans.
Exodus is slated for release in early 2027 on PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X, with further gameplay details expected this summer. This game promises a grand narrative with intricate lore, combining familiar RPG elements with fresh mechanics and a compelling mystery. Its focus on deep world-building, character-driven story, and a blend of action and exploration aims to deliver a memorable experience that builds upon the legacy of its spiritual predecessors while forging its own unique identity in the sci-fi RPG genre.
