The local sports scene is heating up with several thrilling matches and community events on the horizon. On Saturday, January 18th, the girls' basketball teams from Lynden Christian and Squalicum will face off at Squalicum High School. The Storm, despite being the youngest team in the league, has shown remarkable improvement, winning four out of their last five games. They have managed to score over 44 points per game while keeping their opponents below 40. Meanwhile, Lynden Christian, leading the conference standings, boasts a more seasoned lineup and taller players, averaging an impressive 60 points per game.

In men's basketball, Western Washington University (WWU) will host Western Oregon at Carver Gymnasium. After a promising start, WWU has faced some challenges but still holds the eighth position in the conference. Key players like Will Wilson and Grant Kelley continue to lead the scoring and assists. Western Oregon, however, struggles near the bottom of the conference, having lost their last three games. Additionally, the region's youth will enjoy a special day at Mt. Baker Ski Area on Wednesday, January 22nd, where kids can hit the slopes during their school holiday. Although registration is full, interested participants can join the waiting list.

The upcoming week promises a variety of activities that foster community spirit and athletic excellence. From competitive matches to volunteer opportunities, these events highlight the importance of teamwork, perseverance, and community involvement. The young athletes, especially those from Squalicum, demonstrate that experience is not always necessary for success. Their upward trajectory serves as an inspiration to all, reminding us that dedication and effort can lead to remarkable achievements.
