The annual Edible Car Contest at Illinois Valley Community College (IVCC) is set to captivate audiences once again, showcasing the ingenuity and creativity of participants. This year's event will take place on Wednesday, February 26, in the College Cafeteria. Attendees can expect a day filled with excitement as teams compete in various categories, from speed to design. Registration opens at 10 a.m., followed by judging at 11:30 a.m., and the races kick off at noon. The contest draws competitors from the college as well as local junior high and high schools, all vying for medals and bragging rights.
Inspiration for this unique competition emerged two decades ago when IVCC aimed to promote its engineering program. Computer Aided Design instructor Dorene Data and other college representatives sought an engaging alternative to the typical robotic demonstrations. Food-based creations were chosen due to their accessibility and cost-effectiveness compared to electronic components. Since then, a wide array of ingredients has been transformed into whimsical vehicles. From salami and cheese to Rice Krispies treats, these edible cars have featured three wheels and two axles, sometimes even including marshmallow Peeps as drivers. Every component must be consumable, regardless of how appetizing it may appear after the race.
The contest not only entertains but also serves as an educational platform. Crafting a functional vehicle from edible materials requires a blend of scientific, mathematical, and engineering skills. Chemistry plays a crucial role in maintaining the integrity of certain ingredients, such as preventing ice cream carriages from melting before the race. Creative problem-solving is essential, encouraging participants to think beyond conventional methods. Sponsored by IVCC’s MIMIC project and the Workforce Development Division, this event celebrates National Engineering Week while fostering innovation and learning among students.
