Legendary Tennis Icon Roy Emerson Serves Up a Comeback for a Worthy Cause

Australian tennis legend Roy Emerson, a longtime local Newport Beach resident, is returning to the center court on behalf of Costa Mesa-based "Save Our Youth" (SOY). For decades, Emerson and his wife, Joy, have been at the forefront of the Adoption Guild/Holy Family Services annual Tennis Tournament and Exhibition, raising millions for child adoption services in Orange County. Reviving the Spirit of Tennis for a Brighter Future

Introducing the Roy Emerson Tennis Classic

The inaugural Roy Emerson Tennis Classic will take over the courts in Newport Beach from May 22 to 26, 2025. This event will welcome USTA competitors from the 3.5 open level player fields, providing a platform for aspiring athletes to showcase their skills. The tournament is being sponsored by generous social activists Bob and Britt Meyer, with underwriting from their company, Meyer Natural Foods. Joining the Meyers as co-chairs are Eric and Joanne Davidson, who are dedicated to bringing Roy Emerson and the sport of tennis back to the heart of Newport Beach.

Emerson's Enduring Legacy and the Evolution of Tennis

If you asked Roy Emerson about the changes in tennis over the past half-century, the man who started playing on dirt fields in his native Australia would have a wealth of insights to share. Emerson's journey in the sport has been a testament to the game's remarkable transformation, both in terms of technology and the caliber of players. As the sport continues to captivate the nation and the world with its exceptional youth, Emerson's return to the courts in Newport Beach promises to inspire a new generation of tennis enthusiasts.

Unveiling the Roy Emerson Tennis Classic

To launch the May 2025 tennis event, the Meyers invited a select group of local tennis devotees to a dinner party in their home, dubbed the "unveiling party." Britt Meyer, known for her impeccable style and eye for décor, created a summer floral-themed celebration, with a color palette of white, cream, and pale-yellow blooms, complemented by abundant "tennis accents." The event was a resounding success, with guests eagerly discussing the latest developments in the U.S. Open and the excitement surrounding the upcoming Emerson Tennis Classic.

A Collaborative Effort to Revive the Sport and Support SOY

The tournament's major support is in the hands of a dedicated team, including tournament chair Chris Garber, tournament director Drew Arbeiter, and lead committee director Cameron Ball. These individuals are working tirelessly to ensure the success of the Emerson Tennis Classic, which will not only showcase the sport but also raise funds for the important work of SOY.

Celebrating the Return of a Tennis Legend

The unveiling party was a celebration of Emerson's return to the courts, as well as a testament to the generosity of the Meyers and the commitment of the event's organizers. Champagne flowed, and guests indulged in a lavish gourmet dinner prepared by renowned chef Nick Weber of Populaire Restaurant & Mix Mix Catering, South Coast Plaza. The evening was punctuated by speeches and tributes, as the excitement grew with the anticipation of Emerson's return to Newport Tennis.

Empowering Youth Through SOY

The celebration for Emerson was also directed in support of SOY, the nonprofit organization that has been serving the community for over 70 years. Executive Director Mary Cappellini shared the organization's mission of providing mentoring, tutoring, college preparedness, and much more for low-income youth in the Newport-Mesa Unified School District. Joining Cappellini was Manuel Chavez, a SOY alum and college graduate, who now serves as the nonprofit's outreach and program manager. The Emerson Tennis Classic will not only revive the sport but also contribute to the vital work of SOY, empowering the next generation of leaders.
