Earlier this month, a remarkable community fundraising effort brought about the complete renovation of Central College's tennis courts. This came on the heels of a brand new videoboard and football turf installed during the summer. The project was generously funded by numerous alumni, community members, and city partners. A celebration to honor these donors is scheduled for 2025.Project Timeline and Progress
In August, Midwest Tennis & Track Company tore out the six courts just west of P.H. Kuyper Gymnasium. By November, the renovation was completed. For the first time since 1991, a new concrete foundation was laid. This will be the first new surface on the courts since 2008. If the weather cooperates in spring, the courts could host their first competition when the Dutch women take on Truman State University (Mo.) on March 19th.
The transformation of these tennis courts is a significant milestone for Central College. It not only enhances the athletic facilities but also brings a sense of pride to the college and the community. The attention to detail and the quality of the renovation are evident, making these courts a true asset.
The new surface and foundation will provide a better playing experience for the student athletes and potentially attract more competitions and events in the future.
Conversion to Pickleball Courts
In line with the college's Imagine More initiative, the tennis courts can be converted into 12 pickleball courts. As local interest in pickleball continues to grow, this provides an additional recreational option for the community. Vice President for Athletics Eric Van Kley is thrilled about this aspect.
"This is not just a Central College project; it's a Pella community project. Our Imagine More initiative is deepening these relationships and opportunities. Six tennis courts and 12 pickleball courts can be used by community members when the weather allows, especially during spring, summer, and fall. It's an exciting opportunity for the broader community to enjoy these facilities," said Van Kley.
The conversion to pickleball courts shows the college's commitment to meeting the evolving needs and interests of the community. It adds another dimension to the athletic offerings and promotes a more active lifestyle.
Fundraising for Future Enhancements

The support from the community for these fundraising initiatives is crucial in ensuring the continued growth and development of the college's athletic facilities. It shows the collective commitment to providing the best possible resources for the student athletes and the community.
With the successful renovation of the tennis courts and the ongoing fundraising efforts, Central College is poised to offer an even more vibrant and inclusive athletic experience in the years to come.
