In El Paso, Texas, a local nonprofit organization is transforming the lives of children by promoting literacy and fostering a love for reading. Books Are GEMS has taken on the ambitious goal of placing books in the hands of every child within the community, all at no cost. The organization aims to empower families and inspire young minds through access to literature. Every week, children from toddlers to high school students can receive seven free books, including one brand new title and six gently used ones. This initiative ensures that parents can easily obtain reading materials for their children, even while they are at school.

To further engage the community, Books Are GEMS hosts a weekly event called Saturday Story Time, which takes place every Saturday at 11:30 a.m. The first 50 families to visit each week receive an additional free book, adding excitement and incentive for regular participation. The bookstore operates with flexible hours, open Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from noon to 6 p.m., and on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. For those wishing to contribute, book donations are accepted on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from noon to 4 p.m. The organization emphasizes the importance of not leaving donations outside the premises.

Through its ongoing efforts, Books Are GEMS continues to make a significant impact on literacy rates in El Paso, Southern New Mexico, and Ft. Bliss communities. By providing free books and hosting engaging events, the organization is nurturing a generation of avid readers. Supporting this mission through book donations or financial contributions helps ensure that more children have access to the resources they need to thrive. Together, we can build a future where every child has the opportunity to discover the joy and power of reading.
