Colorado 3A Football: Thompson Valley's First State Title Over Mead

Dec 7, 2024 at 8:44 PM
In the Colorado 3A high school football championship game held at Fort Collins' Canvas Stadium on Saturday, an extraordinary tale unfolded. No. 1 Thompson Valley, with a flawless 14-0 season, sealed their first state title with a late fourth-down stop against No. 2 Mead, winning by a narrow 16-14 margin.

Defense: The Backbone of the Victory

The Eagles' defense, which had dominated all year, once again made the clutch plays. In the final minutes, after Mead grabbed an interception and drove to the TVHS 30-yard line, Thompson Valley forced three incompletions and a four-yard loss, effectively stopping the Mavericks cold. Just before halftime, senior Dane Gray intercepted a deflected Christian Hiner pass near the line of scrimmage and rumbled 20 yards for a pick-six touchdown, giving Thompson Valley a 9-7 lead. These defensive plays were the turning points of the game.

Landry Suarez and Ryan Case led Thompson Valley with 17 combined tackles, five for a loss. CJ James grabbed a first-quarter interception and had a disruptive day with five tackles. The defense allowed a mere 89 points (6.4 per game) and pitched five shutouts, showing just how powerful they were. As senior Dane Gray said, "We had to be on point. We slipped up a little but those big plays can't get to our head. We have to be a powerhouse defense."

Offense: The Early Spark

The first-year quarterback Finley Lucas scored on the first drive with a 41-yard touchdown run. This touchdown was made possible by Eli Metzger's incredible pass completion after turning a punt snap over his head. It was a moment that Lucas described as "remarkable" and coach Jamie Steele said, "I was like that, 'What just happened here?' I don't understand how it happened, or this whole season happened … Just remarkable."

Throughout the game, Thompson Valley had just six first downs and under 200 total yards, yet they managed to win with one offensive touchdown and an Eli Metzger field goal. Their offensive performance was a testament to their ability to make the most of every opportunity.

Player Performances: Standout Moments

Christian Hiner ultimately earned 3A Most Outstanding Player honors, making some big-time throws but also tossing two picks with 132 yards on 7-of-16 passing. Mead was just the third team to score in double figures against TVHS this year. The Eagles' defense was truly a force to be reckoned with.

Several players on this year's Thompson Valley team had parents on the 1989 squad, adding a special touch to this year's championship. As coach Jamie Steele said, "I just feel great for these kids. I told them their parents can sleep now. We got one for them, too."
