CD Projekt Red and Weird Co. have officially announced the upcoming release of a new trading card game titled 'Cyberpunk TCG.' This exciting news coincides with the fifth anniversary of the popular video game 'Cyberpunk 2077.' A promotional trailer for the card game debuted on December 9th, generating significant anticipation among fans. While specific details regarding gameplay mechanics remain under wraps, it appears players will construct decks around a central 'Legend' character, supported by 'Unit' and 'Gear' cards to accumulate 'Street Cred' and undertake 'Gigs.'
Luohan Wei, co-founder of Weird Co., expressed enthusiasm for how the game successfully integrates core 'Cyberpunk' themes, such as executing gigs and assembling a crew, into the trading card format. He believes this adaptation is both authentic to the 'Cyberpunk' universe and introduces innovative elements to the broader TCG market. The trailer showcases Night City visuals from 'Cyberpunk 2077' alongside various card reveals, featuring recognizable units like Psycho Squad, Offduty Malfini, and Swordwise Huscle, each possessing distinct abilities. Prominent Gear cards like Mantis Blades, Kiroshi Optics, and Mandibular Upgrade are also highlighted. Fan-favorite characters confirmed as Legends include Jackie Welles, Judy Alvarez, Saburo Arasaka, V, and Goro Takemura. A notable moment in the trailer demonstrates the synergy between the V, Corporate Exile card and the Dying Light gear card, mirroring a scene from the 'Cyberpunk 2077' game. Furthermore, the game's scope extends beyond 'Cyberpunk 2077' to include characters from the 'Cyberpunk: Edgerunners' animated series, with a free Lucyna Kushinada card offered to early registrants.
Weird Co. was established earlier this year by Elliot Cook and Luohan Wei, who connected through mentor Bill Mooney. The team comprises designers with experience from other successful card games such as 'Marvel Snap,' 'Duel Masters,' and 'Universus,' working closely with CD Projekt Red to ensure the game's quality and thematic consistency. The collaboration emphasizes a shared commitment to creating a handcrafted product, eschewing AI in development, and fostering strong local TCG communities. Patrick Mills, CDPR's Franchise Content Strategy Lead, affirmed the initial focus of 'Cyberpunk TCG' on the 'Cyberpunk 2077' universe, with meticulous attention given to card artwork and flavor to capture the essence of each character and their memorable moments. Players can look forward to collecting a diverse array of character variants, including V, Johnny, Panam, Judy, and Adam Smasher, inviting them to immerse themselves in the world and build their own formidable decks.
