Amid rising tensions between Canada and the United States, officials in Quebec are emphasizing the importance of sportsmanship. Mayor Bruno Marchand addressed the public during a press conference on Tuesday, urging fans to refrain from expressing their dissatisfaction with U.S. policies towards young athletes. The plea comes in response to several incidents where American national anthems were met with boos during hockey matches involving young players.

In preparation for an upcoming Peewee hockey tournament, both local government and sports authorities are working to ensure a welcoming atmosphere for all participants. Marchand highlighted that targeting children who come to play and contribute positively to the community is not only inappropriate but also counterproductive. He emphasized that it's essential to differentiate between political figures and ordinary citizens. "Donald Trump does not represent all Americans, and we should not let our frustration affect innocent visitors," he stated.

The message to keep sports and politics separate was reinforced by Quebec’s sports minister, Isabelle Charest. She stressed that young athletes should not bear the brunt of international disputes. It is crucial for spectators to channel their concerns through appropriate channels rather than impacting the experience of youthful competitors. This approach fosters mutual respect and understanding, promoting a positive environment where sports can thrive beyond political boundaries.
