At the upcoming Arab Music Ensemble Fall Concert on Dec. 7, traditional performance etiquette takes a backseat. Music professor Kenneth Habib reveals that students can expect a different interaction with the music. They'll be seated beside those actively engaged, calling out and enjoying in a unique way. Maybe even getting up to dance! This concert offers a one-of-a-kind chance for students to witness the audience dynamics at a live performance of Arab and Armenian music. The first half showcases the Arab Music Ensemble, while the second half features the Chookasian Armenian Concert Ensemble.
Discovering Different Musical Genres
The Arab Music Ensemble will present a variety of genres. One such genre is muwashshah, which will be performed by the choirs. Originating in the south of Spain, it has spread across Africa and Asia. Muwashshah is not only music but also poetry. It adds a rich cultural dimension to the concert. This diverse range of musical styles allows audiences to immerse themselves in the beauty and complexity of Arab music.Another aspect that makes this concert special is the opportunity to experience the rhythm and pitch differences between Western and Arab/Armenian music. In Western music, there are typically four beats per measure. However, in Arab music, the number of beats per measure can range from five to 24. These variations create a unique and captivating musical landscape.Working with Students and Overcoming Challenges
One of Habib's favorite parts of directing the ensemble is working with the students. For this concert, they have to learn to sing Arab or Armenian songs with lyrics in unfamiliar languages. It's a challenging task as they have to make sounds that don't exist in English. But through their hard work and dedication, they are able to overcome these obstacles. Habib is impressed by their willingness to learn new music, just as they would learn a new language. Their enthusiasm and determination shine through in every performance.Even with the difficulties, the students' progress is remarkable. They are able to adapt to the different musical styles and rhythms, bringing a new energy to the concert. Habib's guidance and support play a crucial role in their development, helping them to explore and express the music in their own unique ways.Bringing Cultures to Cal Poly
Habib is excited about bringing the music of Arab culture and West Asian North African culture to Cal Poly and San Luis Obispo. This concert provides a platform for these cultures to be shared and enjoyed by a wider audience. It helps to break down barriers and promote cultural understanding. By experiencing the music firsthand, students and the community can gain a deeper appreciation for the rich diversity of the world. The concert is not just about the music; it's about creating a sense of community and connection. People from different backgrounds come together to celebrate and enjoy the beauty of Arab and Armenian music. It's a powerful experience that leaves a lasting impression on all who attend. To experience this extraordinary concert and learn more about the event, visit https://www.pacslo.org/events/detail/amefall24 and buy your tickets today.
