According to local news source 36kr, BYD has plans to introduce new vehicle models equipped with self-developed advanced driving systems in the coming year. Zhang Zhuo, the sales manager of BYD Series Ocean, stated that the company will utilize the in-house developed driving system in vehicles priced around 150,000 yuan or lower within 2-3 years. He revealed on July 1 that BYD will launch the Sealgull model with an advanced driving system next year, which is the most affordable model in the brand.
In addition, Xinliu News reported earlier that BYD will use Nvidia's Orin N or Horizon Robotics' J6E driving chips in the 100,000 yuan vehicle model, which comes with features such as the on-road NOA navigation system. Currently, BYD is planning to replace both Orin N and J6E chips with its own 80 TOPS chips, as reported by 36kr.
The development of self-developed driving chips will enable BYD to enhance software and algorithm optimization quickly. This helps reduce production costs and gives BYD an edge in terms of pricing. Currently, BYD Fang Cheng Bao Bao 8, a model in their brand, is equipped with Huawei's driving assistance system and uses its own BYD 9000 processing chip for advanced driving of the vehicle cabin through a 4 Nm process.
Meanwhile, while competitors like Nio and Xpeng already have their own chips and are ramping up production, it remains to be seen when BYD will introduce its own driving chips. We will have to keep a close eye on the progress.
