Brazos Valley Collects $200K+ in 2024 Food Drive for Families

On Wednesday, a remarkable 15-hour period witnessed an outpouring of donations aimed at assisting thousands of Brazos Valley residents. The food bank reported a significant influx of new donors this year, enabling them to continue their vital work of providing for those in need. Volunteers dedicated their time to sorting food, drinks, and toiletry items in the aftermath of KBTX's 29th Annual Food for Families Food Drive. Theresa Mangapora, the executive director of the Brazos Valley Food Bank, expressed her pride in the local community's turnout.

Local Community's Generosity

"The local community is truly coming together to take care of their neighbors. It's not just about bringing food to Bryan and figuring out what to do with it. It's about embracing and showing care for those around us. We're seeing a spirit of unity that is truly inspiring," Mangapora said. Thanks to the generous donations, many in the Brazos Valley can now breathe a sigh of relief, knowing they won't have to worry about their next meal.

On average, one in six people in the Brazos Valley faces the risk of hunger. However, with the collected donations, the food bank has raised over $200,000 and 125,000 pounds of food. This significant amount will make a substantial difference in the lives of those in need. "It's easy for some of us to focus on our own needs, but there are families out there skipping meals and making difficult choices. Our efforts help to alleviate that burden," Mangapora explained.

From 2019 to earlier this year, food insecurity increased by 72%. In Burleson county alone, with the amount of money and food collected yesterday, three pantries will be stocked for the entire year. This shows the immediate and lasting impact of community support.

Volunteer and Donor Efforts

Food is still being weighed, and online donations continue to trickle in. The Brazos Center collected more food than last year, highlighting the collective effort. "During this busy season when demand can be high, knowing that the community has taken care of things for them is a wonderful feeling," Mangapora added.

The 15-hour food drive was a long and exciting day, but it was only possible with the help of volunteers and donors. Just because the drive is over doesn't mean the support should stop. Year-round assistance is crucial in addressing food insecurity.

We want to extend a heartfelt "THANK YOU" to everyone who donated and volunteered with us and the Brazos Valley Food Bank yesterday. Your efforts have made a significant impact, helping us raise over $200K and 125 pounds of food. Together, we can continue to make a difference in the lives of those in need. https://shorturl.at/TZPTQ
