In Green River, the spirit of Christmas is about to be filled with the enchanting sounds of Handel's "Messiah" once again. This annual interfaith community choir event has been a beloved tradition since 2011, bringing together people from all walks of life regardless of their faith. Bonnie Arnold and Nancy Stevens were the visionaries behind its founding, and it has since become a source of joy and unity.
Bringing Hope and Goodness
George Frideric Handel performed the first "Messiah" choir performance in 1742 in Dublin, Ireland, with the noble purpose of gathering food for the poor. Just like Handel, the Green River choir aims to give hope by collecting canned foods and non-perishable items for the Food Bank of Sweetwater County. Attendees are encouraged to bring their donations as they enter the LDS Stake Center on December 15th at 7 pm. There will be tables set up in the foyer for easy drop-off.Musical Excellence
This year, the choir consists of 45 talented singers, accompanied by a small orchestra featuring flutes, a cello, harp, violin, oboe, piano, and organ. Alongside the classic "Messiah" pieces, Nancy Stevens and Bonnie Arnold have included more contemporary choir pieces that showcase the amazing talent in the community. The "Hallelujah Chorus" is a highlight that never fails to move the audience. Arnold's direction of the Christmas carol sing-along with the audience adds an extra layer of fun and excitement. As a Green River native, she knows the community well and creates a unique experience for everyone.Overcoming Challenges
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the tradition had to take a pause for two years. But now, they are back stronger than ever, ready to share the magic of Handel's "Messiah" with the community. Arnold mentioned that preparing for the performance usually takes around four months, which is a significant time commitment. However, with their passion and dedication, they have managed to make it happen.Giving Back to the Community
The choir is not just about the music; it's about giving back. By collecting food for the food bank, they are making a real difference in the lives of those in need. It's a beautiful way to celebrate Christmas and show kindness to one's fellow community members. All are welcome to attend this Sunday's performance and be a part of this meaningful event.
