In a significant announcement on Tuesday, Allen University revealed the appointment of Andre Payne as the new head coach for its men’s basketball team. With over 25 years of experience in college coaching and administration, Payne brings an impressive track record that includes more than 200 wins across various levels. Most recently, he served as the women's basketball head coach at Talladega College during the 2024-2025 season, leading the team to notable achievements such as excelling defensively and maintaining a high academic standard.
Payne's journey in collegiate athletics began in 1999 at Texas College, where he started as an assistant before becoming the head coach in 2001. Over five seasons, he guided the program to numerous successes, including their first-ever appearance in the Red River Athletic Conference Championship game in 2005. His leadership extended beyond the court; Payne also served as the interim Director of Athletics from 2001 to 2003, overseeing the launch of three sports, including football.
His career highlights include a stint at Wiley College, where he won 146 games and led the team to the NAIA Tournament in his inaugural year, ending a 34-year drought. At Mississippi Valley State University, Payne coached Division I men’s basketball, achieving 25 wins, mentoring two All-SWAC performers, and being named Coach of the Year. He also contributed to community development by initiating a mentoring program for young teens.
Before joining Allen University, Payne worked in South Carolina at Denmark Technical College from 2020 to 2023. There, he expanded the athletic department significantly, introducing seven sports, founding the school’s first Athletic Hall of Fame, and overseeing a major gymnasium renovation. On the court, he ensured academic excellence, with two student-athletes graduating as valedictorians and 40% receiving scholarships to four-year institutions.
Director of Athletics Phillip Wallace Jr. expressed excitement about Payne's appointment, stating that his extensive experience makes him the ideal candidate to lead Allen's men’s basketball program. President Dr. Ernest McNealey echoed this sentiment, looking forward to an exciting and competitive season ahead.
With degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Human and Sports Performance, Payne is well-equipped to inspire both athletic and academic success at Allen University.
Andre Payne’s appointment signifies a promising future for Allen University's men’s basketball program. His proven ability to foster teamwork, discipline, and academic achievement sets a strong foundation for the team's growth. As he takes the helm, fans and stakeholders can anticipate not only competitive gameplay but also a commitment to holistic athlete development. Payne's emphasis on unity and perseverance could serve as a powerful example for athletes aspiring to excel both on and off the court.
