Recognizing Japanese Contributions to Alabama's Economy

The 2024 JASA Annual Dinner and Business Forum serves as a testament to the vital role Japanese companies play in Alabama's economic success. During the event, six expanding Japanese companies operating in the state were recognized for their contributions to the local economy. These companies represent a diverse cross-section of the automotive and manufacturing industries, driving growth and innovation across Alabama.As these Japanese companies expand their operations, they not only contribute to Alabama's economic development but also create high-quality jobs and drive technological advancements. Since 2015, Japanese companies have announced plans for nearly $5 billion in new capital investment and over 8,000 job commitments, according to data from the Alabama Department of Commerce.

Celebrating Legislative Efforts to Strengthen Ties

The evening also honored the recipient of the organization's prestigious Samuel Ullman Award: State Rep. Mike Shaw, who co-sponsored and championed the passage of a bill this year that created the Alabama-Japan Legislative Exchange Group in the Alabama House of Representatives. This group aims to "pursue friendship and cooperation between the members of the House of Representatives and the people, government, and businesses of Japan," further solidifying the state's commitment to its Japanese partners.

The JASA Business Forum, held on the second day of the event, delved deeper into the intricacies of doing business in Alabama from both Japanese and local perspectives. Speakers such as Kiyoshi Tanigawa, Executive Director of Keidenran USA, and executives from Mazda Toyota Manufacturing and Topre America Corp. shared their unique insights on navigating the state's business landscape and fostering successful operations.The forum also featured a presentation by David Sides, International Trade Manager at the Alabama Department of Commerce, who provided an overview of the state's robust Japan-Alabama business relationship and highlighted future opportunities for growth as Alabama continues to attract Japanese investment and develop international trade links.

Celebrating Milestones and Strengthening Ties

The 2024 JASA Annual Dinner and Business Forum marked the 35th anniversary of the organization's efforts to foster stronger ties between Japan and Alabama. It was also an occasion to highlight significant milestones reached during the year, including the growth projects of Japanese companies, the creation of the House Alabama-Japan Legislative Exchange Group, and Samford University's focus on international expansion into Japan.According to Mark Jackson, Honorary Counsel General of Japan (Alabama), over 50,000 Alabamians have attended Japan-focused events within the state during the first 10 months of 2024, underscoring the deep-rooted interest and engagement between the two regions."Our leaders understand Japan is an important partner to Alabama, and I am happy to work with them as this partnership continues to expand," Jackson said.
