Coe's wife, Kathy, recounts the humble beginnings of the event, "I asked him what he wanted for his birthday, and he said he wanted a zombie walk." Participants in the Zombie Walk make a $10 donation to join the festivities, meeting at Ed's Broadway Gift & Costume at 8 p.m. on the day of the event. Those in need of assistance with their zombie-inspired makeup can arrive as early as 6 p.m. to work with a professional artist, who charges a nominal fee for their services. Once transformed, the zombies take to the streets, walking around the downtown area and making stops at various restaurants, where they are treated to complimentary hors d'oeuvres.
