The Baldwin Public Library has introduced a remarkable Library of Things, offering a wide range of items for rent. Cardholders can now access tools, electronics, and more. One of the standout features is the availability of video game consoles like Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo. Librarian Ethan Cronkite, who coordinated this initiative with Jen Hassell, noticed that the first items rented out were these consoles. People had long expressed a desire to rent games but lacked the necessary hardware. This new service has proven to be highly popular.

Unique Offerings in the Library of Things

In addition to video games, the library is renting out record players. With a large collection of vinyl records, those without a record player can now enjoy their favorite music at home. During non-ideal seasons, the Library of Things also has outdoor games like cornhole and giant Jenga. These can be rented for family reunions, birthday parties, or other outdoor events. Another unique offering is the memory kits for seniors, designed to help them exercise their memory.

Section 1: Video Game Rentals

The availability of video game consoles has been a game-changer. People can now rent out these consoles and a variety of games to enjoy. It provides an affordable way to explore different gaming experiences without having to invest in expensive hardware. Cronkite mentioned that the response has been overwhelming, with many people taking advantage of this service. It has added a new dimension to the library's offerings and attracted a wider audience.

For example, families can rent a console and some games for a weekend and have a great time together. It's a great way to bond and create memories. Additionally, for gamers who don't want to commit to buying a console, renting is a convenient option.

Section 2: Outdoor Game Rentals

The outdoor games in the Library of Things are perfect for outdoor gatherings. Cornhole and giant Jenga add a fun element to parties and events. They can be set up in the backyard or at a park and provide hours of entertainment. Cronkite envisions people renting these games for special occasions and creating lasting memories with their loved ones.

Imagine a family reunion where everyone gathers around the giant Jenga set, taking turns and laughing. Or a birthday party with cornhole tournaments, adding a competitive edge. These outdoor games bring people together and create a festive atmosphere.

Section 3: Memory Kits for Seniors

The memory kits for seniors are a valuable addition to the Library of Things. These kits offer activities that help seniors keep their minds sharp and active. It's a way to engage in meaningful activities and have fun while improving cognitive function.

Library Director Rebekah Craft emphasized the importance of these kits. "The memory kits are designed to provide a sense of purpose and enjoyment for seniors. They can do these activities at their own pace and in the comfort of their own homes."

In addition to these main offerings, the library also has an extensive toy collection in the youth room that can be rented. And for those in need of internet access, there is an "internet to-go kit" available.Learn more about the Baldwin Public Library and its Library of Things by visiting baldwinlib.org or calling (248) 647-1700.
