Ayianna Johnson's Journey from Reluctant Hooper to Promising Buff

Ayianna Johnson's path to becoming a standout basketball player for the Colorado Buffaloes was anything but straightforward. As a young child, her mother initially discouraged her from pursuing the sport, believing she lacked the focus and dedication required. However, Johnson's determination and passion for the game eventually prevailed, leading her on a remarkable journey that has now brought her to the doorstep of a fresh start with the Buffaloes.

Unlocking Her Potential: From Disinterest to Dedication

Overcoming Early Doubts

When Ayianna Johnson was a child, her mother, Shana, was hesitant to sign her up for youth league basketball. "She said that I would just run up and down and not even want to touch the ball," Johnson recalled in a recent interview. This early skepticism about her daughter's commitment to the sport was a hurdle that Johnson would eventually overcome, but it would take a significant shift in her mindset to get there.

Finding Her Passion

It wasn't until Johnson's sophomore year in high school that she truly found her passion for basketball. Determined to get back into the sport, she convinced her mother to let her try again. "My mom was like, 'If I'm gonna pay all this money, you need to lock in,'" Johnson said. "And I was like, OK, so I did. It took me here, so I think it worked out."

Embracing a Multifaceted Athlete

Growing up, Johnson's athletic prowess extended far beyond the basketball court. She participated in a wide range of sports, including ballet, figure skating, floor hockey, flag and tackle football, gymnastics, volleyball, and wrestling. "My mom (Shana Johnson) worked at the YMCA, so there was just so many opportunities there, so she just signed me up for everything," Johnson explained. This diverse athletic background would ultimately contribute to her development as a well-rounded and versatile player.

Realizing Her Potential

Recognizing her size, strength, and athleticism, Johnson became increasingly serious about basketball during her sophomore year at Jefferson High School. Her dedication paid off, as she earned a scholarship to the University of Minnesota, where she would take the next step in her basketball journey.

Seeking New Opportunities

Despite her growth with the Gophers, Johnson felt the need for a change. "I think for me, it was just more about opportunities and kind of seeing what other places had to offer," she said. Drawn to the abundant opportunities and the welcoming community in Boulder, Johnson decided to transfer to the University of Colorado, where she now finds herself as one of the Buffaloes' promising newcomers.

Embracing the Buffaloes' Culture

Johnson's transition to Colorado has been a positive one, as she has embraced the Buffaloes' supportive community and the stunning natural surroundings. "I absolutely love it (at CU)," she said. "I mean, I feel like the community is super supportive of the Buffs, everyone's just super nice here, friendly people, and the views are amazing. Yeah, I love it here."

Adapting to a New System

As a newcomer to the Buffaloes' program, Johnson is still in the process of adjusting to the team's system and building confidence in her new role. "It's a whole new system with all different players. … I'm working on it, but I think that I'll get there once we have more time," she said. With the increased practice time during the 20-hour weeks, Johnson is confident that she will continue to improve and find her footing with the Buffaloes.

Embracing the Opportunity

Johnson is eager to make an impact with the Buffaloes, who have been to back-to-back Sweet 16s. While she acknowledges the pressure to live up to the program's standard, she is determined to contribute her unique strengths to the team. "My ability to run and just have that, like, stamina for the entire game is really going to help us," she said. "And again, since I'm not as big, I am very strong, though."

Positive Early Returns

Despite the challenges of transitioning to a new team and system, Johnson's early performances have been promising. Head coach JR Payne has noted the significant strides she has made since arriving on campus. "AJ has grown exponentially since she got here," Payne said. "When she first got here, it was like drinking out of a fire hydrant; just everything was so new, which it was for everybody. But, she's made tremendous strides and is having great practices. I think she's been very, very good this past week and a half that we've been practicing."As Ayianna Johnson continues to adapt and develop within the Buffaloes' program, her journey from a reluctant hooper to a promising Buff is a testament to her determination, versatility, and the power of finding one's true passion. With the support of her new team and the Colorado community, the future looks bright for this talented young athlete.
