According to the Broward Sheriff's Office, the car had two occupants – a woman who was driving and a male passenger. The male passenger was able to escape the vehicle, but the woman, tragically, did not survive. Divers recovered her body from the vehicle, and she was pronounced dead at the scene.
The identity of the deceased woman has not been released by the authorities, and her age remains unknown at this time. The male passenger, on the other hand, was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Investigators from the Broward Sheriff's Office are now working to determine the exact cause of the crash. According to BSO spokesman Carey Codd, the authorities believe it was a single-car incident, with the vehicle crashing into a small bridge before plunging into the canal.
"This is a very tragic and heartbreaking situation, and our hearts go out to the family of the young woman who died here today and all those who know and care about her," Codd told reporters at the scene.
The crash also caused significant disruptions to the local traffic, with the westbound lanes of Griffin Road from Pine Island Road to the 8800 block of Griffin Road being shut down, along with Orange Drive between the 8700 and 8800 blocks. Authorities have stated that Griffin Road will reopen soon, but Orange Drive is likely to remain closed for a while as the investigation continues.
This tragic event serves as a somber reminder of the importance of road safety and the need for vigilance behind the wheel. The community of Cooper City will undoubtedly come together to support the family of the deceased woman and to find ways to prevent such heartbreaking incidents from occurring in the future.
