Wisconsin started the season with high hopes, looking like a force to be reckoned with. However, a home loss to Penn State, a blowout defeat to Iowa, a narrow loss to top-ranked Oregon, and now this historic loss to Nebraska have dashed those dreams. The team that was once on top is now struggling to find its footing.
The four-game stretch has been a nightmare for the Badgers. They have gone from being a team with a bright future to one that is on the verge of missing out on a bowl game. This rapid decline is a cause for concern for fans and the coaching staff alike.
ESPN FPI and SP+ have provided some sobering updates on Wisconsin's performance. Before the Nebraska game, the team was ranked No. 34 in FPI. But the loss dropped them down to No. 41, and FPI now projects their final record at 5.5 - 6.5. There is only a 51% chance of them defeating Minnesota in Week 14 and making it to a bowl game.
SP+ is even more pessimistic about the team's quality. The Nebraska loss dropped Wisconsin from No. 50 to No. 59 in the metric. They are now ranked as the No. 13 team in the Big Ten, behind teams like Rutgers, Maryland, Michigan State, Northwestern, and Purdue. This is a far cry from the program's typical standard and the expectations set by Chris McIntosh and Luke Fickell when he was hired in 2022.
A win over Minnesota in Week 14 would be a crucial step in getting the Badgers back on track. Extending the program's bowl streak to 23 games would be a significant achievement and show that the team is still capable of performing at a high level. But without a win, the program's rapid fall from national relevance will likely continue.
It is up to the coaching staff and the players to turn things around. They need to learn from their mistakes and come back stronger in the remaining games. Only then can they hope to restore the pride and reputation of the Wisconsin Badgers football program.
