The recent winter storm has brought hazardous travel conditions to the Upstate region, leading to a surge in vehicle accidents. Authorities have reported over 100 incidents due to icy roads, prompting officials to advise residents to remain indoors for safety. Master Trooper Mitch Ridgeway emphasized that driving should be avoided as much as possible, especially with freezing road surfaces. If travel is absolutely necessary, drivers are urged to exercise extreme caution, drive at reduced speeds, and avoid sudden braking or sharp turns.

Several notable incidents have been reported across the area. In Pickens, an accident on North Homestead Road led to a utility pole falling around 2:15 p.m. on Friday. Utility workers promptly responded and repaired the damage. Additionally, Interstate 26 experienced multiple collisions, including one near exit 18A onto Interstate 85 Southbound and another at exit 19B. These events highlight the severity of the travel risks posed by the storm.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning, which remains in effect until 7 a.m. on Saturday. Temperatures are expected to plummet to 29 degrees Fahrenheit overnight, causing ice accumulation on bridges, power lines, and trees. Particularly along Interstate 85, these conditions pose significant hazards. Residents are reminded to prioritize safety, stay informed about weather updates, and take proactive measures to protect themselves and their communities during this challenging time. By exercising caution and heeding official advice, we can collectively ensure a safer environment for everyone.
