The early access pirate-themed game, Windrose, has received a crucial update designed to mitigate excessive data writing to solid-state drives. This development follows concerns from players and technology reviewers regarding the game's high write volume, which could potentially shorten the lifespan of certain SSDs, particularly QLC models or older drives. Developer Kraken Express has released a patch that specifically targets and reduces disk usage during gameplay, aiming to improve the game's overall performance and hardware compatibility.
The issue gained widespread attention when content creator Pixel Operative conducted tests, revealing that Windrose exhibited significantly higher read/write operations compared to similar survival games like Enshrouded and Valheim, even during brief play sessions. This was corroborated by Tom's Hardware, which estimated that a four-hour gaming session could lead to an astounding 432 GB of data being written to a drive. Such high write volumes are especially problematic given the current memory supply challenges, making hardware preservation a top priority for many users.
In response to these findings, Kraken Express promptly released patch version 0.10.0.4.268-9d2ca277, which, according to the patch notes, has successfully reduced disk usage during gameplay. Furthermore, the developers have continued to refine the game's data management, with version 0.10.0.5.120-073042fb introducing automatic data backups every 10 minutes of gameplay and upon exiting the game. These measures are intended to optimize data handling and prevent undue wear on player's storage devices.
Despite these technical improvements, the developers have advised players to manage their expectations regarding future content updates during the early access phase. While no progress wipes are currently planned, Kraken Express acknowledges the inherent unpredictability of early access development. They have communicated that substantial new content is at least six months away, emphasizing that significant feature development requires considerable time and effort.
The proactive steps taken by Kraken Express to address the SSD write issue demonstrate their commitment to improving the early access experience for Windrose players. With the game's technical performance enhanced, players can now enjoy the pirate adventure with less concern for their hardware. The focus now shifts towards continued bug fixes and stability improvements, as the development team works towards delivering future content.
