In the upcoming days, West Tennessee will witness significant road construction activities across various counties. The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) has announced multiple lane closures and traffic adjustments from January 8 to January 15, 2025. These measures aim to improve infrastructure through repairs, installations, and safety enhancements. Key areas affected include Carroll, Chester, Dyer, Gibson, Fayette, Hardin, Madison, Shelby, and Tipton counties. Motorists should anticipate temporary lane closures, detours, and reduced speed limits during this period.

Roadworks Details and Affected Areas

Carroll County: In the picturesque autumn landscape of Carroll County, SR-76 (US-79) will undergo extensive improvements including grading, drainage, noise walls, signals, and paving. Lane closures will be implemented along U.S. 79 (S.R. 76) from near S.R. 77 to Cutlip Lane. Additionally, Meadowbrook Lane and Big Buck Road remain closed with detours provided. Intersection upgrades on SR 22 at Clyde Road and Lexington Street within the Huntingdon Industrial Park will also necessitate lane closures.

Dyer County: The bridge over the North Fork Forked Deer River will experience outside lane closures for inspection and evaluation starting August 9, 2024.

Gibson/Carroll County: Construction on US 79 (SR 76) between Cades-Atwood Road in Gibson County and SR 77 in Carroll County includes a concrete box bridge, noise wall, and paving. Traffic was shifted to new lanes on November 11, with final work continuing under traffic conditions.

Chester County: Bridge repairs on U.S. 45 over overflow, Turkey Creek, and Dry Creek will begin lane closures for southbound traffic on October 1, 2024. Northbound lanes will remain unaffected.

Hardin County: Rehabilitation of the SR 128 bridge over the Pickwick Dam will cause temporary lane closures, but one lane will remain open at all times.

Fayette County: Grading, drainage, signals, and paving on SR 222, including the I-40 interchange, will lead to lane closures. Speed limits have been reduced from 45 MPH to 40 MPH on SR 222. Meanwhile, SR 76 from Lagrange Road to Kay Lane will be reduced to one lane with temporary traffic signals installed.

Shelby County: Nightly lane closures on SR-4 for roadway widening and intermittent closures on SR-14 for widening activities are scheduled. Significant changes include modifications to the I-55 interchange at E. H. Crump Blvd., resulting in lane closures and detours. Notably, the Hernando DeSoto Bridge over the Mississippi River will have single and double right lane closures for maintenance.

Tipton County: Safety improvements at the intersection of US-51 (SR-3) and Kenwood Avenue will involve inside and outside lane closures daily, with at least one lane open in each direction.

Implications for Commuters and Local Residents

The comprehensive roadwork in West Tennessee underscores the commitment to enhancing transportation infrastructure and ensuring long-term safety for residents and travelers. While these projects may cause temporary inconveniences, they promise improved travel conditions and modernized facilities upon completion. Drivers are advised to exercise caution, adhere to posted speed limits, and follow detour routes diligently. For real-time updates and traffic information, TDOT encourages the use of their SmartWay traffic cameras and the 511 travel information service. This proactive approach highlights the importance of public cooperation during essential infrastructure development.
