Webtoon Entertainment has announced a monumental partnership with The Walt Disney Company, sending its shares soaring by over 58% in after-hours trading. This collaboration marks a significant milestone in the digital comics landscape, as it will bring together a vast array of iconic titles from Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar, and Disney onto a single, subscription-based platform. This new service, designed and operated by Webtoon Entertainment, will build upon the existing Marvel Unlimited, offering fans unprecedented access to more than 35,000 comics.

This innovative platform will feature both vertical-scroll and traditional comic book formats, blending archived series with original narratives. To cater to a global audience, selected titles will also be translated for Webtoon's Korean and Japanese markets, further expanding the reach of these beloved stories. Josh D'Amaro, Chairman of Disney Experiences, emphasized that this unified digital hub will provide fans with unparalleled access to their favorite adventures. Additionally, Disney+ subscribers will gain complimentary access to a curated selection of titles through the Disney+ Perks program, enhancing the value proposition for existing subscribers.

Beyond the content integration, the partnership also includes a non-binding term sheet for Disney to acquire a 2% equity stake in Webtoon Entertainment, pending final agreements and closing conditions. This move follows a multi-year collaboration that has already seen nearly 100 Disney classics reformatted for Webtoon's distinctive vertical-scroll style. Financially, Webtoon recently reported robust second-quarter revenue of $348.3 million, an 8.5% year-over-year increase, driven by growth in paid content, advertising, and intellectual property adaptations, while Disney's third-quarter revenue reached $23.7 billion, up 2% year-over-year, with Disney+ subscriptions rising to 128 million.
