Video games have emerged as the top holiday gift choice for kids this year, according to a report from the Entertainment Software Association. It's not just a traditional toy off the shelf anymore. The survey shows that 67% of girls are also asking for video-game related gifts. When asked about their desires, nearly half still express a want for a console like the Switch, Xbox, or PlayStation. And an astonishing number are seeking Game Pass subscriptions.

Holiday Guide for Parents

The Entertainment Software Association has a dedicated Holiday Guide website that offers valuable information for parents. One important aspect is the ratings system. The Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) has been rating video games for over 30 years. So, if a kid asks for a specific game, parents can look at the ESRP age rating. Good news for parents is that over 80% of video games are rated EA for everyone (EA ten plus or T 14), while only a small minority are rated M for mature. The ESRP Rating symbol is located on two places on a game box - the front and the back. And if a kid wants to download the game directly to their device or phone, those ratings are also available on all digital storefronts. The devices used to play these games come with parental blocking capabilities. These features can limit the time spent playing games, set time of day limits, and restrict the games kids can access based on ESRB age ratings. Parents can also limit or entirely block in-game purchases and player-to-player communication. It's easy to set up and manage these parental controls using an app on a smartphone. When a child requests more time or a specific game, parents receive alerts on their phone, which they can accept or decline. They also get weekly updates on the time spent playing. In conclusion, video games are a significant part of the holiday season, and with the right parental controls, parents can ensure a safe and enjoyable gaming experience for their kids.
