Mass Effect 2: The Cinematic Masterpiece
George Osborn, the creator of Video Games Industry Memo and the managing director of Half-Space Consulting, with 15 years of industry experience and a background from the University of Cambridge, shares his insights on the games that have left an indelible mark on his gaming journey. At the top of his list is Mass Effect 2, a title that he believes transcends the boundaries of traditional video games.Osborn describes Mass Effect 2 as a game that seamlessly blends the immersive experience of choice-based gameplay with the cinematic grandeur of a high-quality television series. The episodic structure of the game, he explains, is a key factor in its enduring appeal, as it allows players to become invested in the narrative and the consequences of their decisions."It's got that sense of episodic structure to it which is so good," Osborn says. "I generally love the Mass Effect series, but this is my absolute favorite."The game's ability to captivate players with its rich storytelling, complex characters, and the weight of their choices has cemented its status as a true masterpiece in the realm of video game narratives.GoldenEye 007: The Nostalgic Multiplayer Gem
Stepping back in time, Osborn's list includes the iconic GoldenEye 007, a game that holds a special place in his heart. As one of the games he grew up with, GoldenEye 007 was a formative experience that introduced him to the social aspect of gaming."It's one of the games I grew up with, it's a game I was possibly playing a little bit too early, but it's very much reminiscent of me playing video games with my brothers together," Osborn reflects. "It helped me really establish that sense of the social side of video games, for me that was the starting point for it."The shared experiences and memorable moments created through GoldenEye 007's multiplayer mode have cemented its status as a beloved classic, one that continues to evoke nostalgia and a sense of camaraderie among gamers.Slay the Spire: The Addictive Rogue-like Deck Builder
Osborn's list takes an unexpected turn with the inclusion of Slay the Spire, a game he discovered through a serendipitous encounter. After lending his 3DS to a friend during the lockdown, Osborn received a voucher as a gesture of gratitude, which he used to purchase Slay the Spire on a whim."I bought this on a whim because someone had said it was quite good and I think I've got about 400 hours into it now," Osborn reveals. "Considering each run-through is about 45 minutes, that gives you a sense of you always come back for more."Slay the Spire's addictive blend of rogue-like gameplay and deck-building mechanics has captivated Osborn, leading him to invest hundreds of hours into the game. The game's ability to keep players engaged and coming back for more is a testament to its design and the inherent satisfaction it provides. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time: The Timeless Adventure
Osborn's reverence for the Zelda series is evident in his inclusion of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time on his list. While he acknowledges the merits of more recent entries like Tears of the Kingdom and Breath of the Wild, Ocarina of Time holds a special place in his heart as the first game in the series that truly captivated him."Majora's Mask was probably the more interesting game, but Ocarina of Time was this enormous, epic adventure which blew my mind as a kid," Osborn explains. The game's ability to transport players into a vast and immersive world, coupled with its masterful storytelling and iconic characters, has solidified Ocarina of Time's status as a timeless classic. Osborn's fondness for the game reflects the enduring appeal of the Zelda franchise and its ability to create unforgettable gaming experiences.Football Manager: The Tactical Obsession
Topping Osborn's list is the Football Manager series, a game that has not only provided him with countless hours of entertainment but has also played a pivotal role in shaping his career."It's the series I have played most in my life, it's also probably the game that's most responsible for me being where I am now because I established a bit of a reputation as someone who knew a bit about Football Manager so I managed to pick up work in the games industry doing reviews and various pieces around it," Osborn reveals. As an avid football fan with a deep appreciation for the tactical aspects of the sport, Osborn finds immense satisfaction in the Football Manager series. The game allows him to live out his dream of being a football manager, despite not having the opportunity to play professionally."Off the back of that, I was able to get loads of other work in my career so that was great," Osborn says. "But as someone who is an obsessive football fan, as someone who really likes the tactical side of the game, and as someone who is listening to six football podcasts on rotation, Football Manager plays into my dream of being in that sport and that world in probably the only way I would ever hope to be in it."Despite the occasional frustrations of losing in the game, Osborn's unwavering passion for Football Manager has made it a cornerstone of his gaming experience, one that has had a profound impact on his professional and personal life.
