New purchasers of Valve's forthcoming virtual reality device, the Steam Frame, might find a complimentary copy of a Half-Life game bundled with their acquisition. However, this isn't a new installment in the series, but rather 'Half-Life: Alyx', a title many VR enthusiasts might already own. This potential offering resurfaces a prior practice by Valve, where 'Half-Life: Alyx' was provided free with purchases of the Index VR headset, an event that took place several years ago.
Brad Lynch, a renowned dataminer, brought this to light by sharing images of code strings referencing a 'Frame Alyx Promo'. Further observations from Lynch on social media platforms indicated a historical precedent for such promotions, specifically citing the bundled offering with the Index VR headset following the game's initial launch. It's noteworthy that this occurred quite some time ago.
In a previous disclosure, Lynch highlighted that internal development branches of 'Alyx' have seen regular updates since the beginning of the previous year. While the public application is only now starting to receive these cumulative updates, the implication is that these adjustments are tailored for optimization with the Steam Frame. However, official confirmation for this remains pending.
Lynch has established a credible track record for unearthing VR-related information, having previously identified the renaming of several SteamVR code components to 'Frames' in anticipation of the Steam Frame's official unveiling. More recently, he uncovered what appears to be the first official Android application on Steam, suggesting an integration that would leverage Valve's proprietary Android compatibility layer for Linux, known as Lepton. Furthermore, Lynch speculated in June that the entire VR industry could anticipate significant advancements in display technology, such as Micro-OLEDs from Samsung, within the next few years.
While the prospect of Half-Life 3 remains distant, the inclusion of a celebrated VR title like 'Half-Life: Alyx' is still a welcome bonus. Nevertheless, the fact that 'Alyx' itself is now six years old might reflect the current landscape of VR game development. Despite the Steam Frame's capability to run an extensive library of non-VR games, the current scarcity of major VR releases means I won't be rushing to acquire a new VR headset in the immediate future.
