The University of Virginia football team has made significant moves over the weekend, securing commitments from key players via the spring transfer portal. Coach Tony Elliott has strengthened the offensive line, added depth at edge rusher, and reinforced the running back position with strategic acquisitions.

These transfers come after a setback earlier in the season when left tackle Monroe Mills suffered a torn ACL during spring practice. The new additions are expected to fortify the team’s lineup as they prepare for upcoming challenges.

Reinforcing the Offensive Line

Coach Elliott prioritized bolstering the offensive line by acquiring seasoned veterans who bring substantial experience. With the loss of Monroe Mills, securing reliable linemen became crucial. The team welcomed Wallace Unamba, David Wohlabaugh Jr., and Makilan Thomas, each bringing unique strengths that promise to solidify this critical unit.

Wallace Unamba, previously at Kentucky, demonstrated resilience and skill with a 64.0 Pro Football Focus (PFF) grade. His ability to protect quarterbacks without allowing any sacks highlights his value. Meanwhile, David Wohlabaugh Jr., formerly of Syracuse, contributed significantly despite limited playing time, earning a PFF grade of 68.6. Additionally, Makilan Thomas, hailing from Arkansas State, boasts an impressive four-season career marked by durability and effectiveness, achieving a PFF grade of 73.4 last season. These players collectively enhance UVA's offensive line depth and performance potential.

Expanding Defensive and Backfield Options

UVA also expanded its defensive capabilities and running back roster through shrewd recruitment. Daniel Rickert, a Tennessee Tech transfer, brings formidable credentials as a sixth-year graduate senior. His extensive experience includes impressive stats such as 31 tackles, 34 total quarterback pressures, and eight sacks in his latest campaign. Rickert's versatility makes him an asset both as an outside linebacker and edge rusher.

Harrison Waylee, another impactful addition from Wyoming, enhances the running back corps. Known for his productivity, Waylee has accumulated 3,193 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns throughout his collegiate career. His average of 5.4 yards per carry underscores his effectiveness. Furthermore, Isaiah Augustave, joining from Colorado, adds youthful energy and talent. Despite modest pass-blocking numbers, his overall PFF grade of 73.6 indicates strong potential.
