Upcoming Reflection Pond Construction: Enhancing ADA & Safety

Dec 6, 2024 at 6:11 PM
December 6, 2024 marks an important milestone as construction preparations begin. From December 20, 2024, faculty, staff, students, and visitors will witness the erection of construction fencing around the Reflection Pond and adjacent parking areas.

Overall Goal: Safety and Accessibility

This anticipated construction project prioritizes safety. By enhancing ADA accessibility around the pond's perimeter and upgrading lighting along the pathway, a larger number of visitors will be able to relish this heart of the campus. The goal is to create a more inclusive and enjoyable environment.

Construction Timeline

All fencing is expected to be erected by January 6, 2025, well before the start of the Spring Semester. This ensures minimal disruption to campus activities.

Key Features of the Construction

Once the work is complete, a small portion of the pond beneath the library bridge will be filled to create an outdoor study and learning area adjacent to the library. This addition will provide a unique space for students and faculty to engage in learning activities.

Changes to Parking Areas

The west Cooper Library parking lot will be closed and fenced. This area will be designated for contractors to move and store materials and equipment. However, there will still be space allowed for deliveries. Additionally, seven employee parking spots on South Palmetto Blvd. will be converted into five accessible spaces during the construction period. Alternative employee parking is available on Nu Street, and there is easy transit access from the Purple Route bus stop on Nu Street. Metered parking will also be available on Fernow Street.
