Laci Sterkenburg: A Rising Star Headed to the University of Utah

Laci Sterkenburg, a Futures qualifier in the backstrokes, hailing from Cumming, Georgia, has committed to the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, joining the Utes' class of 2029. Sterkenburg, who swims for SwimAtlanta and attends West Forsyth High School, has already made a name for herself in the competitive world of high school swimming.At the recent Georgia 7A State Championships, Sterkenburg showcased her versatility, winning the B-final in the 100 free with a new personal best of 53.76. She also placed fourth in the 100 back with a time of 57.29 and led off West Forsyth's 200 medley relay in an impressive 26.72. Her individual efforts contributed 30 points, helping West Forsyth secure a fifth-place finish out of 38 teams.Sterkenburg's success extended to the USA Futures Championships in Huntsville, where she time-trialed the 100 back, setting a new personal best of 1:05.61 and breaking the 1:06 barrier for the first time in her career. She also competed in the 100 free (1:01.69) and 200 back (2:28.20), showcasing her versatility and potential as a well-rounded swimmer.

Joining the Utes: Sterkenburg's Impact on the Utah Swimming Program

The University of Utah's transition to the Big-12 Conference this year marks a significant milestone for the program. In the 2023-2024 season, the Utes finished sixth out of eight teams, with their divers leading the way as the top three scorers at the Pac-12 Championships.Sterkenburg's arrival on the Utah campus will undoubtedly bolster the Utes' backstrokes and relays. Her best times in the 50 back (26.17), 100 back (56.37), and 200 back (2:02.97) would have ranked second, fourth, and fifth, respectively, on the Utes' 2023-2024 roster. With the departure of Norah Hay, the Utes' top backstroker, Sterkenburg's addition will be a crucial asset as the team navigates the competitive Big-12 landscape.

Building a Diverse and Talented Recruiting Class

Sterkenburg is not the only promising addition to the Utes' class of 2029. The program has also secured verbal commitments from Maela McKallip, another Georgia native, and Stephanie Oiesen of Texas, both of whom are sprint freestylers. These athletes will be pivotal in strengthening Utah's sprint relay teams as they compete in the Big-12.
