UNG Women's Tennis Team Advances to NCAA Division II Championship

The University of North Georgia (UNG) women’s tennis team secured their place in the 2025 NCAA Division II Women’s Tennis Championship with a decisive 4-0 victory against Columbus State University (CSU). This match, held at the Duckworth Family Tennis Facility in Clemson, South Carolina, marked the third and final encounter between the two teams this season. UNG, which made history last year by reaching the National Semifinals, aims to surpass that achievement. Despite losing key players from last season, Coach Kent Norsworthy guided his team to an impressive performance, driven by strong contributions from both seasoned veterans and promising newcomers.

In a thrilling doubles showdown, freshman Linn Goerdes and junior Emily Bush set the tone early with a commanding 6-2 win. Following up, the seventh-ranked duo of Angelina Linnikova and Carolina Reis sealed the doubles point with a 6-3 triumph over CSU's top pair. Linnikova, ranked second nationally in singles, continued her stellar season by defeating Nikoline Gullacksen in straight sets, adding another milestone to her already record-breaking campaign. Her teammate Reis also delivered under pressure in the fifth singles slot, prevailing in a tightly contested match.

Freshman Vasilissa Kupriyanova showcased her poise and skill in a dramatic three-set battle. After winning the first set in a tiebreaker, she rebounded from setbacks in the second and third sets to clinch the deciding point for UNG. This victory exemplifies the collective effort of the entire team, where every player contributes uniquely toward achieving their ultimate goal—a national championship.

Coach Norsworthy highlighted the diversity in contributions from his squad, noting how different individuals have stepped up at crucial moments throughout the season. With six primary singles players boasting nine or more wins each, the team embodies resilience and determination. Looking ahead, the Nighthawks will prepare for the national finals scheduled to take place in Altamonte Springs, Florida, later this month.

This remarkable journey underscores the dedication and teamwork within the UNG women’s tennis program. As they advance to compete among the nation's elite, the Nighthawks aim not only to replicate but to exceed their achievements from last year, driven by their shared vision and relentless pursuit of excellence.
