According to the findings, a staggering 22% of families in the area do not earn enough to meet their basic needs. This statistic serves as a wake-up call, highlighting the urgent need to address the underlying issues that are leaving so many families in the shadows. The report goes beyond the surface-level data, delving deeper into the specific communities and demographics that are disproportionately affected by economic hardship. "We see huge variation within neighborhoods, but more importantly, we see huge variation across minoritized communities," explains Michele Claibourn, the Director of Equitable Analysis at the UVA Equity Center. "Racial and ethnic, minoritized families experience much higher levels of economic struggle."Driving Meaningful ChangeThe driving force behind the Orange Dot 6.0 Report is a collective desire to enact meaningful change. "We are proud to partner with organizations like the United Way of Greater Charlottesville, Piedmont Housing alliance, Habitat for Humanity, Loaves and Fishes and countless others, where we all play our part in helping that family get to where they're trying to go, which is a family sustaining wage," Schuyler explains.Bridging the Gap: Connecting Families to OpportunitiesThe Orange Dot 6.0 Report not only highlights the economic struggles faced by families in the Charlottesville region but also provides a roadmap for addressing these challenges. The report emphasizes the importance of connecting families to resources and opportunities that can help them achieve financial stability."We want people to understand the problem, because there's a variety of things we could be doing," Claibourn says. "To help people develop skills and connections to get jobs that pay better wages." By fostering these connections and empowering families with the tools they need to succeed, the community can work towards a more equitable and prosperous future.Collaborative Efforts: Uniting for a Common CauseThe success of the Orange Dot 6.0 Report lies in the collaborative nature of the project. By bringing together Piedmont Virginia Community College and the UVA Equity Center, the report has gained a multifaceted perspective, drawing on the expertise and resources of both institutions. This collaborative approach extends beyond the report's creation, as the partners work alongside community organizations to translate the findings into tangible action.
