







In a significant event held on May 8, 2025, the University of North Alabama women’s tennis team brought their remarkable season to an end in Rome, Georgia. Competing against UNC Charlotte, ranked 48th, the Lions were edged out with a scoreline of 4-0 in the UTR NIT Tournament semifinals. This performance capped off a historic year for UNA, as they achieved an impressive record of 18 wins and 6 losses, marking the most victories in a single Division I program season.
The journey leading up to this match was filled with high stakes and thrilling encounters. Following their quarterfinal victory over Middle Tennessee with a 4-2 score, UNA faced UNC Charlotte for the first time ever in program history. Despite aiming for a second win against a ranked opponent, the Lions fell short. The match began with UNC Charlotte seizing control in doubles play before extending their lead through consecutive singles victories.
UNC Charlotte commenced their dominance by securing the doubles point early in the game. On court three, Prisca Abbas and Lucia Aranda from UNC Charlotte triumphed over Senem Ocal and Mathilde Delaney of UNA with a decisive 6-1 win. Similarly, Ni Xi and Shona Nakano from UNC Charlotte claimed victory on court two against Anoek Pruijmboom and Ada Karabacak from UNA with a 6-2 result.
Transitioning into singles play, UNC Charlotte continued their momentum. Prisca Abbas secured the first singles win on court five with a commanding 6-0, 6-1 victory over Senem Ocal. Next, Lucia Aranda added another point for her team on court four by defeating Mathilde Delaney with scores of 6-4, 6-3. Finally, Shona Nakano completed the sweep by prevailing over Anoek Pruijmboom on court six with a 7-5, 6-3 win.
With this outcome, UNC Charlotte advanced to face Washington State in the WNIT Finals scheduled for May 9 at noon. The University of North Alabama concluded their season on a high note, achieving a milestone not seen since 1988 when they won 21 matches.
