In a thrilling match that showcased the intense rivalry between two powerhouse teams, UCLA men's tennis claimed victory over USC with a 4-2 scoreline at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. This win marks a significant milestone for the Bruins as they secure their place in the NCAA quarterfinals set to take place on May 16 at Baylor's Hurd Tennis Center. The triumph also brings an end to USC's season, highlighting the unpredictability of postseason play.
Friday's encounter marked the third meeting this season between these crosstown rivals. Earlier in the year, USC had edged out UCLA twice by narrow margins of 4-3 each time. However, this time around, it was the Bruins who flipped the script under the enthusiastic support of their home crowd. Coach Billy Martin, now in his 42nd year with UCLA and a former player from the 1975 season, noted that this was his first super regional match held at the LA Tennis Center.
Martin expressed excitement about the tournament structure changes since 2019, when the round of 16 shifted to preliminary sites rather than the final venue. He recalled how that shift coincided with UCLA's last appearance in Waco against Baylor, emphasizing the significance of returning to the quarterfinals after a four-year absence.
A pivotal moment came courtesy of sophomore Spencer Johnson, ranked No. 35, whose performance clinched the decisive point on court five. After battling through three sets, Johnson emerged victorious over Volodymyr Iakubenko with scores of 6-7(6), 6-4, 6-4. His teammates erupted into jubilation upon surrounding him post-match, celebrating what Johnson described as a fulfilling experience after missing previous encounters due to an elbow injury sustained midseason.
The match saw every singles contest extend into three sets, underscoring the closeness between both squads. Freshman Kaylan Bigun demonstrated strong form early on by securing a convincing 6-2 win in the first set on court three. Following suit were redshirt sophomore Emon van Loben Sels and freshman Rudy Quan, who managed respective wins despite facing challenges in subsequent sets.
Senior Alexander Hoogmartens contributed significantly by overcoming initial setbacks against Karl Lee, ultimately prevailing with consecutive 6-3 victories after losing the first set 6-4. Despite junior Aadarsh Tripathi falling short in his singles match due partly to cramping issues late in the game, the overall team effort ensured UCLA's advancement.
Though UCLA dropped the doubles point similarly to their second-round clash versus California, their resilience shone brightly during singles play. Coach Martin praised the atmosphere created by fans supporting both teams, describing Friday as not only a memorable day for winning but also for enjoying the vibrant sportsmanship displayed throughout the event.
The hard-fought victory underscores UCLA's determination and capability to rise above adversity when it matters most. With high spirits and renewed confidence, the Bruins are poised to make waves in the upcoming quarterfinals, continuing their quest for national championship glory.
