Two Local Orgs Aim to Aid Marion County's Food-Insecure Residents

In Indianapolis, a significant issue persists - nearly a third of Marion County residents rely on food assistance each night. Many attribute this to the scarcity of grocery stores and affordable food options. Kimberly Hale, a clerk at the Mobile Community Grocery Store on the city's east side, vividly describes the situation. "You can drive for blocks or even miles and not spot a grocery store. Our goal is to combat this, and if other businesses join in this mission, it will be a win-win for everyone."

Empowering Communities with Food Access

Mobile Community Grocery Store: A Beacon of Hope

The Mobile Community Grocery Store serves multiple locations on the east side, providing a much-needed service. It offers a wide range of groceries, ensuring that residents have access to essential food items. Hale continues, "We are dedicated to making sure that our neighbors have a place to get the food they need. It's not just about selling groceries; it's about making a difference in people's lives."

These efforts have a profound impact on the community. Residents no longer have to travel long distances to find a grocery store. They can access fresh produce and other food items right in their neighborhood. This convenience has led to improved food security and a sense of community among the residents.

IU Health's The Nutrition Hub: A Lifeline for Patients

On the other side of town, IU Health is making a significant contribution through The Nutrition Hub. This program, made possible through partnerships with the hospital, Gleaners Food Bank, The American Heart Association, and Purdue University, offers a series of lockers filled with groceries for qualifying IU Health patients.Community impact director Meka Christian explains, "This is where our neighbors in the 46202 can access fresh foods through our food lockers. It's a small but crucial step in helping them maintain a healthy diet."

Kellie Watson, who was diagnosed with diabetes last year, was initially worried about finding healthy and affordable food options. However, through The Nutrition Hub, her life has changed completely. "My cabinets are full, my freezer is full, and my refrigerator is full. I'm no longer struggling to find the right food. It's a game-changer," she says.

Combating Food Insecurity: Inspiring Others

Both the Mobile Community Grocery Store and IU Health's The Nutrition Hub hope to inspire others to take action and reduce the number of Hoosiers living with food insecurity. Watson emphasizes, "It's real. Even though you may not see these people directly, food insecurity is happening every day. But with initiatives like The Nutrition Hub, we can make a difference."

Indiana has numerous resources available to help those in need. The Family and Social Services Administration's website provides information about these resources, making it easier for people to access the support they need. By working together, we can create a more food-secure community in Indianapolis.

The Mobile Community Grocery store schedule can be found on their website, making it convenient for residents to plan their shopping. These efforts are a testament to the power of community and collaboration in addressing important social issues.
