Inspiring Students to Make a Difference: Trinity School's B.I.G.G. Project

In Midland, Texas, Trinity School has taken on a remarkable initiative that honors the legacy of a beloved student, Amy Bell, who passed away but left an indelible mark through her compassion and dedication to serving others. The school's annual B.I.G.G. Project, short for "Big Ideas for the Greater Good," is a testament to their commitment to instilling the values of gratitude and giving in their students.

At Trinity School, the educators understand the importance of teaching students about the privilege of having their basic needs met, something not every family in their community can take for granted. Dr. Brian Peters, the Interim Head of the Lower School, emphasizes the school's efforts to inspire students to consider what they can contribute to those in need. "Our kids know when they go home they're going to have a meal tonight, they know this weekend they're going to have food on the table or food in the pantry. Not every family is as fortunate," Peters explains. "We are trying to put into their heart the idea that they are fortunate. What can we give and provide to others? And the thought is, 'Yeah those kids are going to feel good for getting a box of cereal, but don't you feel good as well for what you've done?'"

Addressing Food Insecurity Through Collaborative Efforts

This year's B.I.G.G. Project aligns with Food Action Month, adding a timely significance to the students' efforts. The Trinity students have teamed up with the West Texas Food Bank to address food insecurity in their community by collecting boxes of cereal for those in need. In a creative and engaging display, the students assembled the boxes in a domino fashion, cheering as the boxes tumbled down in a line across the school's campus. This partnership not only helps those facing food insecurity but also provides the students with a valuable learning experience, allowing them to witness the impact they can have on others' lives.

Celebrating the Students' Remarkable Achievements

The students' dedication and hard work have been truly remarkable. Starting with 238 boxes on Monday, they have since tallied over 1,500 boxes of food to support families in need within the community. Libby Stephens, the Chief Executive Officer of the West Texas Food Bank, expressed her admiration for the students' efforts, stating, "I think what was really great about today was being able to witness the joy and excitement and truly put that connection together that they had a huge project and they all came together and they truly are making a large impact."The B.I.G.G. Project at Trinity School is a shining example of how educational institutions can empower students to make a meaningful difference in their communities.
