Cornell's journey in basketball began as a standout player during his high school years at South Bend Clay in the 1990s. His defining moment came in 1994 when he scored a crucial three-pointer to tie the game against Valparaiso in the Indiana State Championship, leading his team to victory in overtime. Transitioning to college, Cornell continued his illustrious career at Purdue University from 1996 to 2000 under Coach Gene Keady. Renowned for his exceptional three-point shooting, he contributed significantly to Purdue's successes, including their Sweet 16 appearances in 1998 and 1999 and an Elite Eight berth in 2000.
Beyond his playing days, Cornell's influence extended into coaching, where he guided the Clay High School girls' basketball team in 2013 and 2014.
