Wilson's decision to direct her own film came as she worked on the adaptation of "Cats" for Universal and Working Title. "I went up to the director and said, 'I'm just not sure you're doing it right,' and a female producer who'd witnessed the exchange came over to me and said I think you should direct a movie one day," she remembered. Initially hesitant, Wilson eventually embraced the director's chair and set her sights on creating a distinctly Australian musical comedy.

"I thought, well, if I'm going to do a movie, it has to be Australian, it has to have a koala and it has to feature plenty of bush," she added, infusing the project with a quintessential Australian flavor."The Deb" follows the story of Taylah Simpkins, a lovable farm girl and high school outcast, who sees the upcoming Debutante Ball as her chance for a life-changing makeover. However, when her cynical city cousin Maeve is exiled to Taylah's drought-stricken town, the status quo is disrupted, leading the two characters on a journey of self-discovery and acceptance.
