The CopperDog 150 dog sled races are set to return to Calumet and other towns on the Keweenaw Peninsula, promising an exciting weekend of winter fun from February 28 to March 2. After a hiatus in 2024 due to insufficient snowfall, this year's event is expected to thrive with ample snow covering the region. The festivities kick off with a street party featuring fireworks and will include various races for both seasoned mushers and enthusiastic spectators.
This winter extravaganza begins with the CopperDog Street Party on Friday evening, where participants can enjoy fireworks and watch mushers and their teams start their journey. The CopperDog150, CopperDog80, and CopperDog50 races will all commence during this festive opening. Saturday brings the shortest race, the CopperDog15, which starts and finishes within the day. Throughout the weekend, dozens of dog sled teams from across the country will compete in these challenging events.
In addition to the main races, there are plenty of activities for spectators. The CopperPull allows dogs of all breeds and sizes to participate in a timed pulling competition, with prizes awarded for top performances. Children aged 4-12 can also get involved through the CopperDash, giving them a chance to experience mushing firsthand. Each young participant will be paired with a sled and a dog, ensuring everyone has a memorable experience.
With abundant snow and a packed schedule of events, this year's CopperDog races promise to be a highlight of the winter season. Spectators and competitors alike can look forward to an unforgettable weekend filled with thrilling races, engaging activities, and community spirit in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.
