On a crisp March morning, the heart of Saranac Lake pulses with excitement as athletes from all walks of life converge for an exhilarating challenge. The third-annual Pole, Pedal, Paddle (3P) Race promises to be a testament to endurance and camaraderie, blending winter sports into one unforgettable event.

Celebrate the Spirit of Outdoor Sports in Saranac Lake

Over 150 competitors are set to embark on this unique multi-sport race, showcasing the best of what Saranac Lake has to offer. From downhill skiing at Mount Pisgah to kayaking down the icy Saranac River, this event is more than just a competition—it’s a celebration of adventure and community spirit.

An Unprecedented Challenge in Winter Sports

The Saranac Lake 3P race stands out as a rare gem among multi-sport events. Participants will traverse diverse terrains, starting with a rigorous climb up Mount Pisgah. Here, they’ll skin or snowshoe their way to the summit before skiing down. The adrenaline rush continues as they transition to biking through the village streets, navigating through narrow paths lined with cheering spectators. This year, organizers have noted a particularly robust winter season, ensuring optimal conditions for the race. Unlike previous years, where concerns over snowfall were paramount, the focus now shifts to managing ice formations along the river. This adaptability underscores the race's commitment to embracing whatever nature provides, turning potential challenges into thrilling experiences.

A Community Coming Together

What sets the Saranac Lake 3P apart is not just the physical challenge but the vibrant community that rallies around it. Spectators line the route, creating an atmosphere of unbridled enthusiasm. Cowbells ring out, horns blare, and cheers echo through the forested trails and along the riverbanks. This communal support transforms the race into a spectacle that everyone can enjoy, whether competing or spectating. One highlight is the Kids 3P, where young athletes aged 5 to 15 get their chance to shine. These mini-champions participate in a scaled-down version of the main event, engaging in downhill and cross-country skiing, biking, tubing, running, and even pushing kick-sleds. Last year, 35 young racers participated, embodying the future of outdoor sports in Saranac Lake.

A Legacy of Excellence

Among the notable participants is Keith Kogut, a local legend who has dominated the 3P race since its inception. His record-setting time of 1:13:20 last year left competitors in awe. Even attempts by his students to form a “Beat Kogut” team couldn’t dethrone him. This year, while Kogut’s challengers may be absent due to college commitments, the race remains fiercely competitive, with returning teams like the DEC forest rangers eager to claim victory.

Embracing the Future of Multi-Sport Racing

As the only official 3P race east of the Rockies, Saranac Lake’s event draws attention from far and wide. Discussions about similar races, such as Vermont’s Mad River Triathlon, add to the intrigue. However, the Saranac Lake 3P retains its distinct charm, rooted in the town’s rich outdoor culture.Registration remains open, inviting both seasoned athletes and newcomers to join. With a variety of categories available—individual, two-person, four-person, five-person, and six-person teams—there’s a place for everyone. The race culminates in an awards ceremony and a community celebration sponsored by RiverTrail Beerworks, reinforcing the bond between sport and community.Participants and spectators alike can look forward to a day filled with excitement, challenge, and unity. As the race kicks off at 9 a.m., the stage is set for another memorable chapter in Saranac Lake’s storied history of outdoor adventure.
