Thanksgiving Day holds a special place in our hearts, and one tradition that continues to thrive is the Lou Marli Run/Turkey Trot. Next Thursday morning (Nov. 28, 2024), at 8 a.m., this popular race will take place at Midland Beach. Sponsored by the Brighton Kiwanis, it has a rich history and a dedicated following.
Honoring a Beloved Figure
This year, the race had to be moved due to course improvements at Clove Lakes, where it has been traditionally held. Race director Steve Zimmermann shared, "Last year was our first year without Bill Welsh, and this will be the first year without (Advance sports reporter) George Kochman. I remember every year George showing up at 6:45 a.m. with his notebook, sitting in his car, waiting for everyone. He used to shadow me and asked so many questions about the race. He knew so much about local road racing, and he will be dearly missed." To honor Kochman, the women's winner will be presented with the George Kochman Memorial Award.Details of the Race
Runners should note that there is no entry fee for Thursday's race. Instead, a donation of non-perishable food is requested for the North Shore food banks. There are several races for both adults and kids. Kids races will start at 8 a.m. with the 7-10-year-olds running 400 meters, followed by the 11-12-year-olds at 8:15 a.m. for 800 meters, the 13-14-year-olds at 8:30 a.m. for a 1-mile run, and the 6-and-under at 8:45 a.m. for 50 meters. Adult races will be held at 9 a.m. for women, 9:45 a.m. for men 40 and over, and 10:30 a.m. for men 39 and under. Each kid gets a Turkey medal or trophy, adding to the excitement.Benefits and Impact
This Thanksgiving Day tradition not only brings the running community together but also has a positive impact. By donating non-perishable food, participants are helping those in need on the North Shore. It's a way to give back during the holiday season while enjoying the thrill of a race. The variety of races ensures that everyone from kids to adults can participate and have a great time. It's a celebration of fitness and community spirit.Remembering the Past
Lou Marli, in the center, presented the female championship trophy to Grace DePompo (right) and Ethiopian star Berhanu Bezabih in 1996. This shows the long history and significance of the race. It's a tradition that has been passed down through the years, and each year brings new memories and participants. Whether you're a seasoned runner or a first-timer, the Lou Marli Run/Turkey Trot is an event not to be missed. For more information about the event, please contact Zimmermann at 917-957-7487 or via email at stevez38@aol.com.
