NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – In the heart of Tennessee, the Midstate is bracing for a significant drop in temperatures. Thursday morning's bus stop and commute will see near or below freezing conditions, a stark contrast to the recent 70-degree weather. Dr. Joseph Gigante, a Professor of Pediatrics at Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital in Nashville, emphasizes the need for quick wardrobe adjustments. "Weather is going to change suddenly and it's going to get cold," he warns. "As it gets colder, really kind of limiting the time outdoors."

Importance of Layering

Both Dr. Gigante and moms like Pam Hammond agree on the significance of layering. Dr. Gigante explains, "You know layering with two, three, and when it really gets cold even four layers of clothing will really keep the warmth close to the child, for the child to stay warm." Hammond and her daughter recall their experiences in Chicago, where they would bring snow pants and snow suits to change during winter. "We would bring snow pants and snow suits to change because we went outside in the winter," her daughter said. This shows the practicality of layering in cold weather.

Benefits of Mittens over Finger Gloves

Recent studies have shown that mittens are more effective at keeping hands warm than finger gloves. Doctors stress the importance of quality shoes to keep toes warm as well. Hammond adds, "Hats, gloves and winter coats. That was about it. We were hearty Chicagoans, so it didn't really phase anyone too much." This highlights the essential items needed to stay warm in cold weather.

Telltale Danger Signs

When it comes to identifying danger signs, Dr. Gigante says children will often be vocal when they need to warm up or put on another layer. But if not, look for any personality changes or body temperature changes. This is crucial in ensuring the well-being of children during cold weather. In conclusion, as Tennessee faces the chill of Thursday, being prepared with the right clothing and being aware of danger signs is essential for the safety and comfort of both children and adults.
