The results of this concerted effort were significant, with 13 arrests made, six vehicles impounded, and four guns seized.The operation was prompted by a surge in complaints from the Fredrickson industrial area, where reports of cars performing dangerous maneuvers, such as donuts and burnouts, had become increasingly common. When deputies arrived on the scene, they encountered a gathering of approximately 30 vehicles in a warehouse parking lot, underscoring the scale of the issue.

Addressing the Alarming Trend of Roadway Fatalities

The crackdown on street racing comes at a critical time, as Washington state has seen a concerning increase in roadway fatalities. In 2023, the state has already recorded the highest number of fatalities on its roads, a sobering statistic that has fueled the authorities' determination to address the problem.Sgt. Darren Moss Jr., a spokesperson for the Pierce County Sheriff's Department, emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, "We already have plenty of examples of why we don't want this to happen. We've had the highest number of fatalities ever in 2023." This stark reality has prompted the creation of a regional task force dedicated to combating the street racing epidemic.

Tacoma's Targeted Approach: Arresting Spectators and Impounding Vehicles

Tacoma has taken a proactive stance in addressing the street racing issue, with the implementation of a law that specifically targets spectators. Shelbie Boyd, a Tacoma Police Information Officer, explained the rationale behind this approach, stating, "If you are one of those people that want to go and film and be a part of that community, we will arrest you for being there and supporting it."In addition to cracking down on spectators, the authorities have also leveraged tougher vehicle impound penalties for street racers. Ofc. Boyd noted that the new law now requires a 72-hour wait before a vehicle can be retrieved, and a second conviction can result in the seizure of the racer's vehicle.
