"SUPERVIVE": The Fusion of Genres I Didn't Know I Needed (Review)

Dec 4, 2024 at 12:08 AM
The past week has been a whirlwind since I embarked on the SUPERVIVE journey. I can't recall precisely how it initially grabbed my attention, whether it was a promotional post on X or a fleeting glimpse on Steam's front page carousel. Its vivid and eye-catching visuals immediately lured me into its gameplay trailer. As that grimy phonk track began to play, I knew this was a game designed for the cool crowd (sunglasses emoji). It was around 2 PM when I first launched this free-to-play gem. "I'll just play a few rounds and get a feel for it." Little did I know, it would soon be midnight.

Gameplay at a Glance

SUPERVIVE seamlessly combines elements of MOBAs and Battle Royales. It takes the best parts of both genres and trims the excess, leaving you with a refined gaming experience. With NPC creep camps to farm, world bosses to conquer, and quests to complete, your team is always engaged between the intense Battlerite-like team fights. From the moment you drop onto the surface, decisions are constantly at hand. Do you clear the camps for levels or take on the opposing team first? Should you lie low and loot some vaults or hop on the train to the other side of the map?

One of the unique aspects of SUPERVIVE is its ability to quickly requeue you into a new match if your team gets wiped out early. The "Find Match" button is a convenient lifesaver, getting you back in the action in no time. However, for new players, the initial setup can be a bit overwhelming. The HUD is quite busy, with upgradeable gear at the bottom-right, character abilities gained through leveling up, and hotkeys for active item pickup and consumable items. It takes a few matches to get accustomed to it all.

Character Variety

SUPERVIVE boasts a roster of 16 characters, each with their own distinct abilities and stylish designs. You can experiment with different playstyles and strategies by choosing different characters. Although not all characters are available immediately upon launch, any Hunter can be unlocked by simply playing the game. The team at Theorycraft Games generously rewards players with XP and in-game goodies through its pseudo-battle pass, and in the future, a premium battle pass with more rewards will be added.

Each match feels like a new adventure with these diverse characters. Whether you prefer a support role or a frontline fighter, there's a character for every playstyle. The unique abilities of each character add depth and strategy to the game, making every match feel fresh and exciting.
