In the heart of summer, when classrooms are empty, a vital program steps in to ensure children across Southwest Montana remain well-nourished. Action Inc.’s free summer meals initiative is back, offering nutritious grab-and-go or sit-down meals to anyone aged 18 and under during weekdays. This essential service bridges the gap created by the school year’s end, addressing food insecurity among young people. Erica Johnson, the coordinator for the Free Summer Meals program, emphasized its importance: it ensures no child experiences hunger while school cafeterias are closed.
This year, the program begins on June 16 at 18 locations spanning Butte, Deer Lodge, and Whitehall. In Anaconda, a complementary effort organized by the local school district will start serving meals at eight sites starting June 9. These tens of thousands of meals are provided freely, with no obligations attached. Children simply need to visit one of the designated sites to receive their meal, without requiring parental accompaniment.
The success of this initiative relies heavily on collaboration. Food preparation occurs centrally at East Middle School before distribution. Funding and support come from various sources, including the USDA, the Montana Office of Public Instruction, as well as numerous volunteers and community organizations. Notably, the Town Pump Foundation contributes funding for one site ineligible for federal aid. However, concerns loom over potential federal budget cuts that could jeopardize the program's future, underscoring the importance of public advocacy to sustain it.
While the summer months bring leisure and fun, they also highlight the critical role of community programs like these. The Free Summer Meals initiative not only nourishes bodies but also strengthens the social fabric of communities in Southwest Montana. By supporting such efforts, residents contribute to a healthier, more equitable society where every child has access to the nutrition they need to thrive.
